A Cut Above: Sharing Your Faith in the Barber Shop

A Cut Above: Sharing Your Faith in the Barber Shop

Apr 01, 2023

In a world where social media is often the primary form of communication, we tend to forget and underestimate the power of face-to-face interactions. African American barber shops are more than just places to get haircuts. They are cornerstones and landmarks in our community, which can provide a unique space for sharing the gospel with those who gather there.

Historically, African American barber shops have played a crucial role in the African American experience. Over time, barber shops have evolved into cultural hubs where males gather not only for grooming services but also for socialization and connection. Since the days of slavery, these establishments have been a safe haven for black men to network, exchange ideas, discuss current events, engage in meaningful conversation, seek counseling, as well as joke around with one another.

The potential of the barber shop within the African American community is demonstrated in the Bible by a story in the book of Acts 18.  In this story, we meet a man by the name of Aquila, a tentmaker by trade, who used his workplace as a platform for sharing the gospel with the Apostle Paul. This example illustrates that any space, including a barber shop, can be a powerful setting for sharing one's faith.

So to effectively share the gospel in an African American barber shop, keep these tips in mind:

Build relationships: Before jumping into a conversation about faith, take the time to build rapport with the customers and the staff at the shop. By establishing trust and genuine connection, you create a solid foundation for sharing the gospel.

Share your testimony. However, before sharing your story, you must be willing to listen to their story. Therefore, show interest in their lives and empathize with their experiences. Remember, the purpose of sharing your story is to be able to share His story, how Jesus has made a difference in your life.

Be patient and respectful: Sharing the gospel can be a deeply personal and emotional experience. Remember that everyone is on their own spiritual journey, and it’s important to be patient and respectful when engaging in conversations about faith. Allow people to ask questions, share their thoughts, and express their feelings.

Offer an invitation: If someone shows interest in learning more about the gospel, connect them with resources and support for their spiritual journey. This can include inviting them to your church or a Men’s Group.  This offer can also be an offer to call and pray with them.

Whatever you do, please don’t come off as holier than thou and judgemental.  If Jesus made all feel valued and welcomed, then so should we.   We have to be sensitive to the unique dynamics of the African American barber so that we can don’t push people away but that we create meaningful connections and relationships with those seeking spiritual guidance. In doing so, we can help to spread the gospel in a powerful and cultural way, one conversation at a time.
