Prepared for Opportunity
Are you prepared for an opportunity?
I once heard Les Brown say, “It’s better to be prepared for an opportunity and not have one than to have an opportunity and not be prepared.”
Natural talent might be the reason why some people have achieved a certain amount of success in life. However, in my experience, it is “opportunity” that seems to be the catalyst to success for many who grow up in neighborhoods that are plagued with crime, drugs, despair, and low expectations. As I write this, I realize that there are those who believe that everyone is given an equal opportunity to succeed, and while I can argue the finer points against this position, I chose to focus on the fact that I do agree opportunity can be found in strange, obscure, and not so obvious places.
Opportunity can be defined as a set of circumstances that makes it possible to do something. I see opportunity as an opening, a break, or a chance to do or obtain something that may have otherwise been outside of one’s resources or outside of one’s reach. With this in mind, the most important lesson I have learned about opportunity is that opportunity is not just something that you get, but “opportunity” is also something that you get to give.
The opportunity for success in one’s career is important, but it fails in comparison to the opportunity that each person has a fuller and richer life. The Bible tells us that Jesus said, “I’ve come that you might have life and have it more abundantly” (John 10). Most biblical scholars and teachers agree the life that Jesus was referring to in this verse is eternal or everlasting life. It’s the same type of life that John taught about in his Gospel when he wrote, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). John was helping us to understand that Jesus came to give humankind the opportunity for a full and rich life with Him and in Him. An opportunity for a life that will last far beyond any earthly death experience. This opportunity for everlasting life was given by God through His Son, Jesus, and is now extended to people by God through people like you and me.
